“Mat” is plastic under-engine shield. With hole cut for oil filter access due to rusted bolts making it unable for previous owner to remove.

Years of abuse and salty roads rendered the metal bracing and attaching hardware corroded. Unable to be easily removed, PO cut hole to access oil filter.
I busted the nuts off and am using the old shield(s) as a template to make a better one out of powder coated 1/16in steel I had lying around at work, along with some bracing.
If it looks like shelving parts, its because they are.

Why bother? Those things are a massive pain in the ass for about 1mpg.

I don’t like rain and snow and mud and small animals ending up in my engine compartment.

Does it actually seal on the mazda 3? All the ones I have seen just cover from the front.

No but it keeps most of the muck out. And if gas keeps climbing about here I’ll be glad for that 1mpg.

That thing fell off of my wife's 3 one winter. We never did replace it.
